Charles C. Finally, Calhoun paints in vivid detail Longfellow's family life at Craigie House, including stories of the poet'sfriends -- Hawthorne, Emerson, Dickens, Fanny Kemble, Julia Ward Howe, and Oscar Wilde among them.

Fanatics and Fire-eaters examines a time when the press gained greater influence and timeliness because of telegraph lines, steam-driven presses, and faster distribution via railroad networks.
